Why do so many websites fail to deliver sales leads?

In my experience there are three problems that stop websites delivering quality sales leads:

  1. The “build it and they will come” fallacy.
  2. Web designers aren’t usually marketing experts.
  3. Lack of keep warm activities, up-sells and cross-sells.

1. The “build it and they will come” fallacy.

Many people think that setting up a website and doing a bit of SEO is all you need to make people find it. 99 times out of 100, that’s not true. You must do more to have any hope of generating sales leads.

You need to plan multi-channel campaigns. Use social media, email, online advertising, printed collateral, and any other channels available to get people onto your website.

Your website needs more visitors!

2. Web designers aren’t usually marketing experts.

A lot of websites look nice but they haven’t been designed around strong marketing principles.

Use of clear “calls to action” (buttons or forms on pages that are prominent and instruct the visitor to perform an action).

Plan well-thought-out user journeys through the site are essential to converting visitors into customers.

Your website doesn’t encourage sales.

3. Lack of keep warm activities, up-sells and cross-sells.

Do you have a sales process or pipeline? Are you looking to generate more business from previous customers? It’s important to have some keep warm activity taking place to convert those sales leads into business.

Setting up semi-automated email campaigns that keep a customer keen or entice them into further purchases are essential. This goes beyond the website and into marketing management systems but it’s your website where the conversions typically occur and you need to use these tools to push customers back onto it.
